Description
Susquehanna Compass
This quilt showcases exceptional beauty and a long list of attributes. An Old Order Mennonite artisan designed it with an original concept. Inspired by a first-place winner at a county fair, this masterpiece combines traditional quilt patterns, vintage fabrics, and color theory. The color shading challenges the piecer and creates a stunning visual for the owner. Approximately 388 different vintage fabric prints seamlessly blend from shade to shade and color to color. After creating the individual blocks, the piecer dims the room’s lighting to arrange the pieces until they achieve the perfect gradient between colors. This square quilt can rotate in any direction on the bed, offering a new perspective each time, as each corner features a color progression. Green, brown, blue, and red fade into pastels and culminate with neutrals at the center. The quilt artistically scatters Mariner’s compasses and sawtooth stars in both large and small sizes. Diagonal chain blocks called Hidden Wells anchor the quilt. The creative energy and charm of this quilt will surely bring delight and beauty to any home.
About the pattern:
Several traditional quilt patterns blend artistically to create this original design.
- Mariner’s Compass: The first known quilt featuring this design appeared in England in 1726. It represents a navigational compass, with a star radiating 16 to 32 points. This quilt includes varying sizes of the compass.
- Sawtooth Stars: These star blocks, made from triangles, feature points that saw into the center. This quilt displays both large and small sizes of these stars.
- Floral Squares: Blocks made from a single piece of floral fabric.
- Hidden Wells: Represented by two sizes of white squares, the Hidden Well anchors the quilt. Mary Ellen Hopkins developed this adaptation of the nine-patch block in 1989.
