Description

Description:

  • This breathtaking quilt features nearly twenty yards of vibrant blue and green, aqua-toned fabric adorned with ocean-themed prints. Likely from the Whale Song collection by Northcott Fabrics, known for its silky-smooth, high-quality materials, the fabrics showcase seashells, underwater plants, water movement, and droplets. At the quilt’s center, a dynamic spinning bargello swirl creates a captivating sense of movement. Known for using fabrics with rich texture and depth, this bargello quilt delivers beautifully on that front. The swirl sits atop a delicate white-on-white butterfly print, adding an elegant touch. In the corners, a postage stamp pattern mirrors the quilt’s vibrant color palette, while the border continues the sense of movement with a leaf pattern floating across water. On the back, a striking floral paisley print offers contrast, and the quilter’s signature is tucked in the bottom corner. Hand-quilted with meticulous, precise stitching, this quilt is a true work of art.

Made by:

  • A local Amish quilter, Sadie Esh

About This Pattern:

  • This quilt is an original arrangement and application of these two quilting techniques.
  • Bargello is a striking and historically rich textile technique that dates back to the 16th century, originating in Italy. In modern quilting, quilters adapt Bargello by using fabric strips of varying widths, sometimes as narrow as a quarter inch or less. The beauty of Bargello quilting lies in the careful arrangement of these strips. By staggering different widths and colors, quilters can produce a vast range of geometric and abstract shapes, often creating a sense of movement or depth.
  • Creating a Bargello quilt requires not just precision in sewing but also a strong understanding of color theory. The interplay of hues and shades, combined with the precise stitching, gives each piece a dynamic, almost 3D quality. Each quilt can look unique based on the strip sizes, color choices, and overall design—making it a perfect blend of art and craftsmanship.
  • The Postage Stamp pattern is specific to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  The Mennonite community, know this pattern as Trip Around the World. The Amish community call it Sunshine & Shadows. Thousands of tiny squares are sewn in rows of contrasting colors to form diamond shapes.
